I hadn’t been to the public library in quite some time, so I was excited to go back and get the chance to learn more about it and its resources. We first had a short presentation on the library and what it provides to its patrons. Even though the presentation was only an hour, it was packed with important information and some that I didn’t even know.
Libraries are extremely important to its communities, especially to the students and teachers. The public library in Prince George has two branches; the Bob Harkins branch downtown and the Nechako branch in the Hart. It is often the case that children will get a library card with their class as a part of a field trip, and all children have a right to a public library card.
The library works hard to be inclusive for all its patrons. For kids who struggle may struggle with reading, there are books that come with a player which will allow the kid to follow along as the book is being read to them. There is a free program called “homework help” that is tutoring for students.
The library also carters to teenagers as well by having a “teen only” sitting area, with computers and comfy seating. I appreciate this because there aren’t many places for teenagers to hangout. They have movies, audiobooks, CDs, and video games. The consoles are in the library where you can sign out the controllers and play in the library. This would be a great way to show teenagers that the library is a great resource that should be used to encourage students to grow and learn.
