Standard 4: Educators value the involvement and support of parents, guardians, families and communities in schools.

There is a popular African proverb that I would like to submit as my artifact for this standard that can often be found in the teaching profession; “It takes a village to raise a child”. This quote essentially means that it takes many people to help raise a child, and teaching is no acception. Though there are many professionals at a school to assist the students, there is only so much time in a day. A teacher knows that parents/guardians are needed in order to help the student succeed. A teacher will have the student for 6-7 hours during the week, the rest of the day is usually spent at home with the family or guardians. Teachers are often seen as on the opposition of the parents, when in fact, they play for the same side, the student’s.

A teacher works together with parents and guardians to create the best plan possible for the student. It is the best interest of the student for the teacher to have a positive relationship with the parents or guardians of the student. This relationship can be harder to maintain than most, there may be conflicting ideas on what may be best for the student. But with patience and communication, it is possible. When teachers and parents work together, it benefits the student and their learning. With everyone on the same page, there’s no room for misunderstands or confusion.
