Standard 1: educators value the success of the all students. Educators care for students and act in their best interests.

As a future educator, its important that I familiarize myself with the education standards of where I am teaching, and in this case, it’s British Columbia. Though these standards seem to be obvious in its statements, they are still important to the health and well-being of the students, as well as the teachers. In order for a teacher to be successful, they need to care for there students so that they can create meaningful relationships. these relationships will be the foundation for students to become educated citizens. When standard one states that a teacher is to act in the best interest of the student, it means that it is beneficial to the student, and not to anyone else.

Though I haven’t had much experience in the classroom, I can provide an example, or artifact for this standard. While I was In Situ teaching at Harwin elementary here in Prince George, my teaching partner and I wanted the students to engage meaningfully with the lessons we would be planning. We asked the teacher what the students liked to do, and we learned they loved arts and crafts. We would then base our lessons on activities that the class enjoyed doing, so that we could better connect with them. We wanted to help the students build their personal identity in a positive way so we read books on diversity, emotions, and the power of “yet” learning. Through these stories and activities, we were able to make meaningful connections to the students and create a safe and accepting environment for them to learn in.
