Standard 8: Educators Contribute to the profession.
The idea of contributing to the teaching profession is something that I find to be a bit daunting. As someone who is completely new to the teaching field, I feel as if I don’t have anything to share, let alone something of substance that would benefit the profession itself. I am still learning so much, while still trying to conceptualize what I have already been taught.
However, as I sit and contemplate the things that could be considered contribution, something came to mind that I thought would fit well. The photo below is a poster for a math game that a fellow cohort member and I created for our math class. The point of creating the game was to showcase it at a parent night at local elementary school in order to help parents and their children continue their learning at home. The game was based on the card game go-fish, but instead of pairing the same cards students would pair cards that equal ten. The parent night was a great success, and lots of students and their parents were able to come.
I got to play the game with students as their parents watched, and I felt like I got the chance to interact with everyone as a teacher. This was early in the Education Program, and I was, and still am, very new to the teaching scene. I had no prior teaching experience in a classroom setting, so I was nervous. Yet, during the event, it felt so natural to talk to the students and their parents. I became less nervous, and more confident as the night continued.
As I continue my journey into my teaching career, I hope that I will be able to contribute more and more to the profession.
